For those looking for a good, solid bass guitar to get started on, check out Performing Musician’s review of the Gear4Music Black Knight. Available in both 4 and 5-string versions, it’s a good example of how ‘entry-level’ instruments are so much better than they used to be in my day! Check out the Black Knight bass range on QuickSound here.

From the stable of Sound on Sound, the venerated music recording magazine, comes Performing-Musician.com, “The Practical Magazine for Musicians & PA Operators”. The site mentions e-subscriptions, but the vast majority of articles seem to be accessible for free. Loads of good information from a trusted source, from speaker reviews to lighting design techniques. Well worth a gander.
UAD1 promotion
Friday, November 14th, 2008
With the introduction of Universal Audio’s UAD2 DSP card, they are offering some attractive incentives on the old UAD1 card. Buy and register any UAD1 before the end of the year and you’ll get an additional $150 plug-in coupon, in addition to whatever is already included in the box. That means you can buy a card for around £250 and get $250 of plug-ins into the bargain. What’s more, you can mix and match UAD1 and UAD2 cards in the same computer, so you can still upgrade in the future. If you have modest needs for extra DSP horsepower or just want a particular killer UAD plug-in or two (and there are many), this is a great deal.

If you’ve ever wondered just why your hard drive is so full, you may find this free hard disk analysis tool useful. Windirstat is an open source (free, as in beer) PC application which will analyse your disk and report back with a very handy graphical representation of just what is sitting on your drive. Use it to identify old stuff you can clear-out, and marvel at the gargantuan proportions of some of today’s sample libraries!
